a year in watching screwball comedies: one movie a month, and the ramblings that follow
What's going on?
I have decided, for various reasons, that in the coming year I’m going to dedicate myself to watching a list of screwball comedies, give an attempt at analyzing the films, and document my findings, musings, etc., here. I do not claim that I will bestow any sort of wisdom or newfound insight; I’m merely trying out an exercise. Again, for various reasons.
The plan is to watch a different movie each month. I grabbed a list from greencine and decided to go with it. There are ten movies they recommend and at the bottom of the list they list another movie, so that makes eleven movies. I don’t know what I’ll do for a twelfth movie. Perhaps I’ll be so sick of this that I’ll just chuck it all out. But for now, I guess I’ll just see what happens.
I’ve seen all of these movies before, some have had more viewings than others. But one of the reasons I really want to do this is that I just want to figure out what makes them tick. Why is it that they’re considered classics? Better yet, why are they funny after all these years? Or are they still funny? Do they translate well across time? There’re lots of questions I have, but the gist of it is that I’m just curious as to why these movies are considered good. I can tell you right now that I liked some more than others; there’s one in particular that just wasn’t as easy to get through. But in the end, I just hope to come out of this with some sort of better understanding and appreciation for these films. I don’t know, just something more to add my plate. Why not, right?
The joyness shall commence in January.
